Group of seasonal firefigthers attending a training camp in Barwon South West

Traditional Owners from across Victoria gathered on Wadawurrung Country at Aireys Inlet in early June for a General Firefighter Training Camp, building skills, sharing knowledge and strengthening partnerships in fire management.

Fifteen participants representing seven Victorian Traditional Owner corporations took part in the camp, which was hosted and facilitated by Forest Fire Management Victoria’s Barwon South West (BSW) team.

Despite cold and wet conditions, participants remained highly engaged and enthusiastic throughout the program. The opportunity to be on Country together and learn side by side was clearly meaningful, reflected in the strong participation and positive energy across the group.

The camp focused heavily on practical, hands-on training. Participants gained experience using operational equipment including radios, drip torches, rake hoes, pumps and Unimogs. They also practiced critical safety procedures helping build confidence to work safely in fire environments.

The training was led by BSW trainers and subject matter experts, who worked closely with participants to make sure they gained the most from the experience.

Programs like this help build Traditional Owner capacity in fire management, strengthen safe operating practices and support teamwork across agencies and communities. They also create stronger partnerships, with Traditional Owners playing an important role in caring for Country.

Importantly, the knowledge gained during the camp will be taken back to communities, helping to support local capability and preparedness.

FFMVic extends its thanks to all participants and partner organisations involved. The camp highlights the value of working together, combining cultural knowledge and operational expertise to help protect Country, communities and culture from bushfire.
