Members of the FPMM attending the debrief before the planned burn

The First Peoples of the Millewa-Mallee (FPMM) delivered their first successful cultural burn, strengthening connections between people, culture and Country.

This burn under the FPMM program took place at Merbein West – Merbein – Wargan Mallee BR – FPMM Block 2, where 6.72 hectares were burnt.

Forest Fire Management Victoria and the FPMM staff worked together to deliver the burn, followed by a shared BBQ, a chance to connect and reflect on a productive day.

Cultural burning enables Traditional Owners to reconnect with Country, share knowledge and strengthen cultural land management.

Supporting this work remains a priority, and DEECA’s Cultural Fire Officer played a key role, linking DEECA, CFA and Traditional Owners to support self-determination, culturally safe workplaces, training and strong partnerships.
