We're celebrating recent cultural fire achievements.
A General Firefighter training camp in Swan Hill for Traditional Owners has equipped participants with essential firefighting skills.
The 5-day intensive course was attended by members from Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (DJAARA), Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Barenji Gadjin Land Council, Tati Tati Kaiejin and Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation.
Delivered by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic), the training was a significant step in preparing the new firefighters for the next bushfire season where they may work alongside FFMVic in fire response in their local districts.
Led by a team of trainers with years of firefighting experience, the program was hands-on and covered topics such as roles and responsibilities, environmental care and safety on the fireline.
Participants gained a deep understanding of bushfire behaviour and how to effectively combat blazes using specialised firefighting equipment.
The practical sessions gave the new firefighters the skills to combat fires and respond to emergencies effectively on Country.
While a few showers and sunny days passed over the camp, the weather was no match for the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants.
