A busy firefighting training camp has brought together four Yorta Yorta men and around 50 Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) staff, all working hard toward their firefighting qualifications.

For the MARRIN-BIDJA crew – strong people or strong mob – this training is more than just another course, it’s a pathway into active fire response and caring for Country.
As part of DEECA’s seasonal firefighter program, they’ve completed vital training and are now finalising their advanced 4WD skills. It’s another step toward playing a frontline role in protecting Country, culture and community.
This training highlights the power of partnership, blending cultural knowledge with modern firefighting to keep communities safe.
DEECA’s Cultural Fire Officer played a vital role, serving as a link between DEECA, CFA and Traditional Owners on matters of self-determination, culturally safe workplaces, relationships, training and navigating processes.
