We're celebrating recent cultural fire achievements.

At Dixons Creek, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) recently partnered with Wurundjeri Narrap Rangers and Bunurong Balirt Biik Rangers to deliver a general firefighter course for Traditional Owner staff.

The training brought together 10 participants from Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, building practical firefighting skills to support both cultural fire programs and broader land management efforts.

Through hands-on learning, participants developed key capabilities needed to safely and effectively take part in fire operations – from supporting cultural burns on Country to contributing to DEECA’s fuel management program across Victoria.

This training is an important step in strengthening the role of Traditional Owners in fire management, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead and participate in caring for Country.

By working together, FFMVic and Traditional Owner groups are building stronger partnerships, supporting self-determination and creating more opportunities for cultural knowledge and modern firefighting practices to come together.

Programs like this not only enhance operational capability but also empower Traditional Owner staff to continue caring for Country in ways that reflect both cultural values and contemporary land management practices.

Together, this work is helping shape a more inclusive and collaborative future for fire management in Victoria.
